Winthrop University is a public university in Stone Hill, South Carolina. It was founded in 1886 by David Bancroft Johnson, who served as the superintendent of Columbia, Due south Carolina, schools. He received a grant from Robert Charles Winthrop, a Boston philanthropist and chair of the Peabody Education Lath in Massachusetts, to institute the school.

Since its inception, Winthrop has adult into a comprehensive university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees through five colleges and schools. Winthrop University was founded In 1886, when the Peabody Education Lath of Massachusetts, headed by Robert C. At the heart of the academy'south athletic facilities is the Winthrop Coliseum.
